I seized her face in my hand. "Do not lie to me!" I hissed. "What is it?"
"Nothing, my lord!" she cried. "I only thought that perhaps…once you return home…you would have no further use for me…and that I might…be freed."
"I'm afraid you're mistaken, my dear," I retorted. "You will be released when you cease to amuse me, as I have said. Have you tired so soon of my company? I have not tired of yours."
I threw her onto the bed and began to undress, when a messenger entered. "Forgive the intrusion, my lord, but there are some ambassadors to see you."
I was puzzled. "Ambassadors?" I repeated. "Shouldn't they see his highness at Targoviste?"
"They insisted on speaking to you, sir," he replied.
"Where are they from?" I asked.
"The Turks," he replied.
This was indeed a strange turn of events. The Turks had never treated with us before. I think both sides realized it wouldn't have done any good. The hatred and animosity on both sides was too strong for mere words to dispel. I had no intention of making any deal with Mehmed, but I shrugged and said, putting my clothing back on, "Send them in."
Three men in turbans were led into my tent. I took a seat and gestured for them to do the same. They bowed and obeyed, looking at me with great fear in their eyes. It pleased me to see it.
"I must confess my surprise at this visit," I said, in Turkish. "I am not the ruler of Transylvania and so do not have the right to treat with you."
"Kaziklu Bey may not be the ruler of Transylvania in name, but our lord knows who holds power in this land," replied one of the men. "Our lord did not retreat in fear of Vladimir."
I laughed. "No. Mehmed is not so much of a coward as all that. So he has sent you to reason with the Devil? That is rather naïve of him, surely?"
The ambassador who had spoken looked to the others. Another spoke. "We will be honest with you, Kaziklu Bey. Our lord fears you. You know this. He does not wish to face the Devil in battle, but he will, if he must. He did retreat after seeing the atrocity you were capable of, but he will not do so again. He will mount another attack on this nation, and he will take it for his own. That is inevitable – his force is mightier than yours. But he would rather not fight you, if it can be avoided."
"I don't see how it can," I retorted. "If you are determined to attack Transylvania, I am determined to defend her."
"Our lord would like to offer you a reward, should you choose not to fight, and instead cooperate with his invasion," said the third man. "If you do not lead your men against him, if you instead let him take this land for his own, he will let you rule it. When Vladimir is deposed, you will be Prince of Transylvania in his place.
